It’s really about awareness, this Earth Day movement that, officially, has been around since 1971. Awareness that there is a relationship between us and nature; awareness of the link between mere mortals and Mother Earth. Awareness that the earth’s resources are not unlimited, and that we need to be mindful of our place in it.
Maybe that’s why sipping a glass of wine is so satisfying. It’s an experience both ephemeral and lasting. A sip of wine is jam-packed with nature, so much so that, if we’re lucky, we become aware of the earth and the vines and the rain and the sunshine that go into every glass.
In a way then, every winemaker is an an environmentalist, every winery a chance for renewal. And one of our favorites is The Dreaming Tree winery of Geyersville, Calif., in the Sonoma valley. The winery is the result of a collaboration between singer-songwriter Dave Matthews and New Zealand native Sean McKenzie, two creative souls who share a passion for wine.
Whether it’s finding the right notes and rhythms in a piece of music, or the right tones and flavors in a great bottle of wine, Matthews and McKenzie have created not only an experience of wine, but one that honors sustainability and the environment.

The 2016 Sonoma County Savignon Blanc. Fresh, light and juicy with tropical fruit aromas of passion fruit and kiwi and a zesty, grapefruit-y finish. It’s perfect for that late April night when you are sitting on your porch or patio and admiring your yard after a long day of work and restoration.
The 2015 California Pinot Noir. Strawberries are everywhere in April, and this juicy, fruity wine, with hints of strawberries, black cherry and toasted carmel, is rich and satisfying. This is the wine you drink after the march for the environment, or your work behind-the-scenes to do something more.
